Adoption process:

Thank you for expressing interest in adopting one of our companion animals. Please follow the below steps to successfully find your perfect pet for your home:

***Animals are available on a first-come, first-served basis during your adoption appointment. There will be no holds at this time (with the exception of animals in foster care).***

Prior to your appointment, we will ask you to fill out a Companion Request Form. Please email your completed form to customercare@placerspca.org or bring a printed copy with you to your appointment.

Things to know before your appointment:

  • Appointments are for the animals we have available for adoption at the time of your appointment. Animals are available on a first come, first served basis only. NOTE: If you are interested in meeting an animal who is in foster care, at our Auburn Location or at our Intake Center, please call 916-782-7722 ext. 0 or email customercare@placerspca.org. We do not schedule adoption appointments at Pet Food Express, it is first come, first served only.
  • Please arrive on time. If you are late, we will cancel your appointment and you may reschedule.
  • Please review the animals that are available for adoption on our website the day of your appointment.

At the time of your appointment:

  • You will be asked to fill out our Companion Request Form and provide a valid ID.
  • Your Get Acquainted Team Member will work with you to find the right fit for your family.
  • You will be allowed to meet a maximum of two animals (if time allows) during your appointment.

Deciding to adopt:

  • Most altered animals are able to go home the same day!
  • For dogs, we will provide you with a disposable dog leash. For cats, you can purchase a cat carrier for $7 or bring your own.
  • If you do not find an animal that fits your family needs, we recommend scheduling another appointment in the future. We are committed to matching you with the perfect pet for your household.

Taking your pet home:

  • Enjoy some quiet time. Give your new pet some time and space to acclimate to you and their new surroundings.
  • Always remember to call us if you need help or have questions. We have a lot of free learning sheets for behavior issues here.
  • Make a list of pet supplies you still need to buy. Coupons for local businesses are supplied at the time of adoption.
  • Call the veterinary office of choice to schedule an appointment for your pet to receive a physical exam. Free vouchers for vet exams are given at the time of adoption.

Send us a picture along with the photo release waiver so that we can share your happy adoption story with our community.

Live happily ever after with your pet.

Please know that it will take some time for your new friend to adjust to their new lifestyle. And don’t worry – you’re not alone.
