Adoption Process

Adoption is currently by appointment only.

The welfare of the animals and people in our community is always our top priority. With that in mind, we are beginning to offer adoptions by appointment! We currently are offering up to 20 adoption appointments per day in order to safely assist one party at a time during business hours.

A Customer Care representative will respond to messages in the order they are received.
***Appointments Available Daily***

Adoption process:

Thank you for expressing interest in adopting one of our companion animals. Due to COVID-19, we have added some recent changes to our adoption process. Please follow the below steps to successfully find your perfect pet for your home:

***Animals are available on a first-come, first-served basis during your adoption appointment. There will be no holds at this time (with the exception of animals in foster care).***

  1. To schedule your meet and greet adoption appointment, please call (916) 782-7722 ext. “0” to speak with a Placer SPCA Customer Care Representative.
    1. Prior to your appointment, we will ask you to fill out a Companion Request Form. Please email your completed form to or bring a printed copy with you to your appointment.

  2. Things to know before your appointment:

    1. Appointments are for the animals we have available for adoption at the time of your appointment. Animals are available on a first come, first served basis only.

NOTE: If you are interested in meeting an animal who is in foster care, please follow step 1 above and let the Customer Care Representative know who you would like to meet.
    2. Please arrive on time. If you are late, we will cancel your appointment and you may reschedule. If you are going to be late, please call us as we might be able to accommodate you at a later appointment time.
    3. No more than two people from the home will be allowed in the building for the appointment.
    4. You must wear a mask upon arrival and during the duration of your appointment. No exceptions. (Children two years and under are not required to wear a mask.)
    5. Please review the animals that are available for adoption on our website the day of your appointment.
  3. At the time of your appointment:
    1. If we are closed, a Guest Services Representative will meet you at the door and pair you up with your Get Acquainted Team Member. If your appointment is during our open hours please check in at the front counter.
    2. You will be asked COVID-19 related questions to confirm you are not experiencing any COVID symptoms or have had previous exposure within last 14 days.
    3. Your Get Acquainted Team Member will work with you to find the right fit for your family.
    4. You will be allowed to meet a maximum of two animals (if time allows) during your appointment.
  4. Deciding to adopt:
    1. Most altered animals are able to go home the same day! For dogs, we will provide you with a disposable dog leash. For cats, you can purchase a cat carrier for $7 or bring your own.
    2. If you do not find an animal that fits your family needs, we recommend scheduling another appointment in the future. We are committed to matching you with the perfect pet for your household.
  5. Taking your pet home:
    1. Enjoy some quiet time. Give your new pet some time and space to acclimate to you and their new surroundings.
    2. Always remember to call us if you need help or have questions. We have a lot of free learning sheets for behavior issues here.
    3. Make a list of pet supplies you still need to buy. Coupons for local businesses are supplied at the time of adoption.
    4. Call the veterinary office of choice to schedule an appointment for your pet to receive a physical exam. Free vouchers for vet exams are given at the time of adoption.
